Speaking to Football Insider, occasional Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has offered a theory surrounding Spurs attacker Erik Lamela after Fabrizio Romano’s claim that he doesn’t intend to leave north London – with the former Lilywhites shot-stopper saying he ‘would not be surprised’ if he signed a new deal.
The Argentine has been described in the past as a player who is ‘perfect’ for manager Jose Mourinho, taking into account his tenacious South American style of play (Jonathan Liew), but Lamela hasn’t been able to feature that often for Spurs this season due to fitness issues and the Portuguese manager’s faith in Steven Bergwijn on the right hand side.
Robinson offers Spurs theory after Romano claim
Regardless of the 28-year-old only managing two Premier League starts all season (WhoScored), reliable transfer journalist Romano revealed just last weekend that he is ‘not planning to leave Tottenham’ and that he is ‘totally focused’ on Spurs (Twitter).
As a result, often Sky pundit Robinson has dropped his take – declaring that he is happy about this news whilst tipping the winger to pen a new contract.
“I’m glad to hear that,” he explained to Football Insider in reaction to Romano’s claim.
“He is a very good player and has been massively underrated during his time at the club. He has always performed well and contributed with goals and assists.
“He hasn’t got much time left on his contract but I would not be surprised if he did sign a new deal. He is only 28, so there is time left in him. There could be another 18-month deal offered to him.
“He is keeping Dele Alli and Harry Winks out of the team which says a lot. He is so versatile and very useful.”
Transfer Tavern take
Judging by Robinson’s take, there is little arguing with the attacker’s ability when given the chance to perform – but one thing that has hampered his time at Tottenham is consistent injury problems (Transfermarkt).
His current contract expires in 2022, and it remains to be seen whether chairman Daniel Levy will invest in keeping Lamela at the club beyond that time given the fitness issues he’s had.
