According to reports out of Spain, it appears Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has now set his sights on another defender as news emerges on Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet.
The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing defensive options…
The Lilywhites and managing director Fabio Paratici have reportedly earmarked the signing of a star centre-back as one of Conte’s major priorities this summer.
Indeed, as reported by The Telegraph, Tottenham already have eyes for the likes of Sven Botman, Josko Gvardiol and Alessandro Bastoni while SIC Noticias reporter Pedro Sepulveda says a scout was sent to run the rule over Fenerbache’s Kim min-Jae.
Now, as per Spanish source Fichajes, Conte is personally eyeing another in Catalans defender Lenglet.
The Latest: Lenglet on the radar…
According to their information, Tottenham are being ‘led by Conte’ as Spurs keep ‘looking for reinforcements in defence’.
As such, the Italian has now set his sights on Lenglet who he personally ‘trusts’, with the France international proving to be a ‘high-quality’ defender when at his very best.
The Verdict: Right call by Conte?
The former Sevilla star would come as an arguable gamble considering he has only played 447 minutes domestically this season, starting four matches and making eight appearances off the bench (WhoScored).
Once lauded as a ‘top player‘ by France boss Didier Deschamps, Lenglet’s market value has absolutely plummeted in recent years – dropping from a career high £54 million in December 2019 to a meagre £12.6 million today (Transfermarkt).
As his value drops by £41.4m, while Spurs could take advantage of this and potentially secure Lenglet for a fee in and around this price, it remains to be seen whether the 26-year-old could cut it in the Premier League.
