According to a report by Mundo Deportivo, as relayed by Sport Witness, an update has come to light involving Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye playmaker?

Since the departure of club favourite Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan last year, it is arguable that Tottenham still haven't found a replacement for the Dane and have missed his creative presence in midfield.

This has prompted recent links to a few creative playmakers in the likes of Jesse Lingard and makeshift options who can play in that position - most notably Juventus starlet Dejan Kulusevski.

In recent days, links have also emerged to Coutinho with the Catalans eager to get his sky-high £380,000-per-week salary off the books.

The Latest: Coutinho open to joining...

As reported by Mundo (via SW), the Brazil international, while not keen on signing for Newcastle, would apparently consider signing for Spurs with Coutinho open to joining.

It is believed by the Spanish source, therefore, that Coutinho 'could go to Tottenham' - coming after a claim from The Sunday Mirror (via talkSPORT) that he had been offered to Antonio Conte's side.

The Verdict: Right move?

The attacker's salary could be a real bone of contention to this move and it is arguable that Coutinho will need to take a major pay cut if Fabio Paratici and Conte wish to sign the player.

However, given he is valued at around £18 million by Transfermarkt, a fee in and around that figure would arguably be attainable to sign him permanently.

Coutinho would come with plenty of credentials, too, with the 63-cap star scoring 54 goals and assisting 45 others during his time in England with Liverpool (Transfermarkt).

Former Spurs fan favourite boss Mauricio Pochettino once lavished the player as 'magic', but other transfer missions like the search for a new striker and right-wing back could take precedent in January over a move for Coutinho.
