According to a report by transfer journalist Erkrem Konur, Tottenham Hotspur and, by extension, chairman Daniel Levy, are interested in Leicester City attacker Demarai Gray – who has been touted as a ‘great signing’ for Spurs and he could put pen to paper on a free deal for the summer.
Spurs talk with Gray
Gray, who is out of contract at the end of this season, is so far refusing to sign an extension at the King Power Stadium and he could be secured by Tottenham in January as this news emerges – either for a small fee in this January window or for nothing in the summer.
Should Spurs sign Demarai Gray?
Players whose contracts run out in the summer are able to negotiate deals before they officially leave their current clubs as free agents, with Konur hinting that this could be a possibility for Spurs as they join the hunt for his signature.
Writing on Twitter, Konur has touted Spurs as negotiators for Gray alongside AS Monaco, Benfica and Olympique Marseille – but it remains to be seen what kind of deal Tottenham could agree.
Transfer Tavern take
Leicester City would arguably prefer to sell him off for a fee during this window, but the player himself may elect to seal an agreement which would allow a free transfer to Spurs, or any other club, in the summer.
Tottenham were linked with Gray throughout the last transfer window, with pundit and ex-Lilywhites striker Darren Bent suggesting that he would be a ‘great signing‘ for the club in a cut-price move.
As this news emerges, Spurs could indeed secure a bargain in the form of a free deal – but whether or not these reports heat up as the month goes on remains to be seen.
