Tottenham have made contact with Benfica about a possible move for right-sided midfield ace Pizzi.
That is according to a report from the print edition of A Bola [via Sport Witness], which claimed that while Spurs have contacted the Portuguese club over a potential transfer, they have yet to submit a formal bid for the 30-year-old.
Pizzi enjoyed a tremendous 2019/20 season for Benfica, scoring 30 goals in 51 appearances in all competitions, including 18 in the Primeira Liga to make him the division’s joint-top scorer and three in their six Champions League group games.
The winger is not just potent in terms of converting chances, either – he also sets up plenty for his team-mates, with 19 assists in all last term, hitting double figures for both goals and assists in the league alone for a second successive season.
If Jose Mourinho can bring his Portuguese compatriot to north London, Pizzi would be competing with right-sided duo Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela for a place in the starting line-up – and based on those players’ respective form in 2019/20, the Benfica man would be fancied to go straight into the team.
Moura famously scored a hat-trick in the epic Champions League semi-final win over Ajax in May 2019 but only managed seven goals in 47 appearances last season. Meanwhile, Lamela netted just four times in 35 games, their combined goal tally of 11 little more than a third of what Pizzi managed on his own.
Pizzi’s age of 30 may seem off-putting, but he has been something of a late bloomer, with the last two seasons distinctly the best of his career in terms of goal involvements.
Even though Portugal’s top flight may not be as strong as England’s, as per UEFA’s association club coefficient, his fantastic goal tally from 2019/20 cannot be discounted, particularly when Spurs’ right-sided options have struggled to score with regularity in recent months.
Would Pizzi get into Spurs' starting XI ahead of Moura and Lamela?
Also, even with Tottenham operating within a restricted transfer budget in this window, £18m should be affordable for a player whose eye for goal is indisputable.
