Tottenham should make a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson in January, according to former top flight striker Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Henderson's lack of playing time

The 24-year-old impressed for United last season, making 12 Premier League starts and threatening to oust David De Gea as first-choice 'keeper.

Henderson has had a frustrating time of things in 2021/22, however, not yet appearing once in the league and seeing De Gea find some good form.

It could be that the England international, whose ability was described as 'insane' by Sander Berge during his loan spell at Sheffield United, looks for a move elsewhere soon in order to enjoy more playing time.

The Latest: Whelan tips Spurs for move

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan claimed Spurs would be an ideal move for Henderson after a report claimed Antonio Conte wanted to sign an English 'keeper, namely Jordan Pickford:

"When it comes to Jordan Pickford, we’ve seen the good and the bad over the past three seasons with Everton.

"International-wise, he’s been pretty much spot on. He’s not made any mistakes when it comes to playing for England. Domestic football, we’ve seen some massive blunders.

"It’s a bit of a strange one for me. I know he’s an international, England’s number one but you’ve also got Henderson at Manchester United who wants out.

"He could be a good replacement for Tottenham as well. If they’re looking to get an English goalkeeper, you’ve got Sam Johnstone at West Brom.

"There are a number of good English goalkeepers out there which Tottenham could turn to."

The Verdict: Long-term Lloris replacement?

Hugo Lloris has been a wonderful servant for Spurs, making 385 appearances overall, but Conte needs to be eyeing up a long-term replacement for the 34-year-old.

Henderson could be ideal in that respect, with the United man unlikely to replace De Gea any time soon and seemingly possessing the confidence to be the first choice at another big club.

With the 2022 World Cup looming, the one-time capped England international will be desperate to make it into Gareth Southgate's squad and only regular football will ensure that.
