Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs handed major boost as Chelsea expected to sell Kurt Zouma to fund transfers

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has been given a huge boost as Chelsea are expected to sell Kurt Zouma in the summer.
The Blues have been busy ahead of the 2020/21 Premier League season as they have already signed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. However, Chelsea will have to clear their books if they want to sign Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz as well.
According to the Daily Star, Roman Abramovich is willing to sell Zouma to cover the costs of a heavy spending spree in the summer, amid interest from Spurs and Everton.
Mourinho is eager to reunite with his former player, as Jan Vertonghen is seemingly set to leave north London in a matter of weeks, and he is keen to add to his defensive options before the start of next season.
The Portuguese initially brought Zouma to the Premier League in the first place after signing him from St Etienne back in 2014 (BBC Sport). It seems that Mourinho is quite fond of his old pupil, as he heaped plenty of praise on him at the beginning of the season (Sky Sports).
Spurs desperately need to find a new centre-back sooner rather than later, as the Belgian’s contract is about to expire, while Japhet Tanganga and Juan Foyth have both succumbed to injury. The Lilywhites have shockingly conceded nearly double the amount of goals as league leaders Liverpool, which will no doubt be a major cause for concern.
Who should replace Jan Vertonghen?
Japhet Tanganga
Kurt Zouma
At the moment, the Frenchman, who will reportedly cost £25m, would certainly be an upgrade on Vertonghen, as he has earned a higher WhoScored rating for his performances so far. Moreover, the 25-year-old would be a shrewd investment to make, as he surely still has plenty of time left in his career.
The two have worked together before, so Zouma will already have a greater understanding of Mourinho’s methodology, which could make him a seamless fit in the future.
