# Tottenham Hotspur: £45.8m bid for Nicolo Zaniolo rejected but Roma may yet be willing to sell

**Tottenham have reportedly tabled a bid of €50m (£45.08m) for [Nicolo Zaniolo](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-lead-nicolo-zaniolo-transfer-race-latest/) which has been rejected by Roma.**

The print edition of [Corriere dello Sport](https://www.corrieredellosport.it/?refresh_ce) claimed \[via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/claim-spurs-managed-put-e50m-table-exciting-player-offer-reached-e60-70m-without-covid/)\] that Spurs, along with three other clubs, each presented offers for that amount to the Serie A side, who duly turned down each bid, while their new owners have reportedly made him unavailable for transfer.

The article added that, had the global pandemic not made such a heavy impact on football clubs’ finances, Roma would likely have had to field offers of €60m-€70m (£54.1m-£63.12m) which may have been difficult to refuse.

Last month, [Correire della Sera](https://www.corriere.it/sport/20_luglio_19/zaniolo-vuole-restare-altro-anno-ma-fonseca-gelo-5d362a08-c9e8-11ea-a1ca-122fad3a9e00.shtml) claimed that Tottenham were in pole position to sign Zaniolo, who has been touted as one of the [hottest prospects](https://www.dreamteamfc.com/c/news-gossip/440558/roma-nicolo-zaniolo-inter-radja-nainggolan/) in European football and even been [earmarked](https://theathletic.co.uk/1854044/2020/06/05/horncastle-zaniolo-roma-italy-serie-a/) as the heir to Roma legend Francesco Totti.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has been a regular presence in the Giallorossi’s line-up over the past two seasons and struck eight goals in 33 appearances last term, along with providing three assists (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nicolo-zaniolo/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/392085)).

Dele Alli, who takes up a similar playmaker role at Spurs, [scored nine goals and set up six in 38 matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dele-alli/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/207929) in 2019/20, with his figures marginally better than those of the Italian youngster.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has declared that, given the [current financial circumstances in football](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/52999782), the club would not be spending “[rivers of money](https://theboyhotspur.com/no-rivers-of-money-and-question-marks-over-players-match-fitness-says-jose-mourinho/)” in the summer transfer window. They have already had an outlay of £43.74m in this window (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tottenham-hotspur/transfers/verein/148)) when considering that Giovani Lo Celso’s permanent signing has been activated following the [expiry of his initial loan deal](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49283542), along with the acquisition of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton.

With Roma’s new owners seemingly declaring a strong ‘not for sale’ message for Zaniolo, and with Tottenham’s initial bid already being rejected, a deal for the 21-year-old appears unlikely in this transfer window.

\[freshpress-poll id=”315585″\]

However, with [Corriere dello Sport](https://www.corrieredellosport.it/?refresh_ce)‘s report suggesting that the Serie A side may be willing to sell at an increased amount, perhaps there is still a chink of light for Spurs if Levy casts off [his frugal reputation](https://www.football-addict.com/en/article/tottenham-hotspur-fc/7-times-daniel-levy-tried-to-avoid-spending-money/5e99da033f8e83316a10ab91) and is willing to sanction a big-money offer for the Roma playmaker.
