Tottenham: Spurs targeting left-sided defender as transfer priority

Tottenham Hotspur are prioritising the signing of a left-sided defender in the summer transfer window, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Tottenham’s defensive struggles

Spurs have struggled defensively this season, conceding 35 goals in the Premier League, the seventh-most of any team in the division, with Clement Lenglet failing to convince after arriving on loan from Barcelona last summer.

The Frenchman was recently criticised for his performance in the 2-0 victory against West Ham United, but he has not been the only problem for Spurs at the back, as Hugo Lloris has made more errors conceding to goals than any other Premier League player.

The Latest: New defender wanted

According to Football Insider, Tottenham manager Antonio Conte is keen to add some defensive reinforcements in the summer, making a new left-sided defender his priority in the next transfer window.

The Italian is yet to make a decision on Lenglet’s future, although he reportedly remains unconvinced by the £145k-per-week earner, so a replacement could be targeted.

The Verdict: Right call?

A new left-sided defender would no doubt be a very wise addition for Spurs, given that Lenglet has struggled to make his mark in the Premier League, ranked by Sofascore as one of the club’s worst-performing players this season.

However, a new goalkeeper should be just as much of a priority, with Lloris now 36 years old and clearly past his best, having become far too error-prone to justify his constant selection. Indeed, the long-serving veteran has been touted for an exit from N17 in recent weeks.

As such, there are multiple areas of the squad that Tottenham will need to strengthen if they want to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal next season, with recent reports linking them to the likes of Giorgi Mamardashvili and Piero Hincapie.
