Reading have started the current season in a way most people expected; plucky but lacking a bit of quality. It now appears that their Russian owner wants to add that quality by bringing Real Madrid B winger Denis Cheryshev to the Berkshire club.
Part-owner Anton Zingarevich wants to buy the player from Real Madrid and was quoted by the Mirror as saying “I cannot guarantee that he will come to Reading, but it is possible and Denis knows that.”
Now whether or not this rumour will become fact anytime soon is unsure as it’s hard to see a 21 year old winger, used to Spanish sun, wanting to swap playing for one of the biggest teams in the world for linking up with Adam Le Fondre, no disrespect ALF. This means that British newspaper the Mirror may be lying to us and that is something that I just can’t imagine ever happening, it would be like finding out that David Cameron doesn’t actually have the interests of the English public at heart and only cares about making money for himself and his chinless and inbred friends.
Reading do have some cash at the moment and were able to convince Pavel Pogrebnyak to join them when all thought a move to Fulham was as concrete as a prediction of rain for the rest of the year in Manchester, so perhaps Cheryshev could be preparing to move in January.
If I was to add to Reading’s squad a winger wouldn’t be my priority however.
From watching them it seems an experienced goalkeeper is needed much more. Perhaps someone like Craig Gordon. With Garath McCleary looking like a smart piece of business, club captain Jobi McAnuff, Hal Robson-Kanu and weekend goal scorer Jimmy Kebe all able to play on the wing, adding Cheryshev may run the risk of making the team bloated in that position.
Besides when a team looks to add quality to their side adding an unheard of youngster that hasn’t played in the top tier of Spanish football isn’t who you’d have in mind.
If Reading were to add quality into their team a central defender would be a good idea. Against Chelsea and Newcastle they have been unlucky but also the masters of their own downfall as poor defending has been the culprit for many a goal conceded. A big man that can lead from the back and command the penalty area like say Kolo Toure. I admit that’ll probably never happen but with a Russian owner the wages wouldn’t be too much of a concern and the Ivorian would bring a wealth of experience to their defence.
Either way adding Cheryshev to the Reading squad would be like Jordan getting another boob job, she does need some drastic change but not in that region.
