Newcastle fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern haven’t had the best week in the transfer window, with a host of clubs circling their top players, however, finally they have some good news.
Newcastle have agreed a fee of £5.5m with Blackburn Rovers for defender Grant Hanley, according to reports from Sky Sports.
The two clubs have been in negotiations for weeks, with Rovers initially demanding a fee of £6m for the academy product.
It now looks as though the 24-year-old will travel to Tyneside to complete his medical with The Magpies, before finalising the transfer.
The centre-half has been with Blackburn since he was 16, and was promoted to the senior team after two years in the youth setup in 2010.
After fellow defender Scott Dann left for Crystal Palace, Hanley was appointed as captain in 2014, and The has made 200 appearances, grabbing 9 goals during his time with the club.
The Scottish international racked up 46 of those appearances last season, in which he managed 10 more interceptions than any other Championship player.
This will be Newcastle’s sixth signing of the summer as with Matz Sels, Jesus Gamez, Matt Ritchie, Issac Hayden and Dwight Gayle already having joined Rafa Benitez’s side.
Tell us your thoughts Newcastle fans, what do you think of Rafa’s potential sixth signing? Is there any chance Newcastle won’t get promoted with this kind of money being spent? Let us know in the comments below…
