Birmingham City fans in the Transfer Tavern have been impressed by some of their side’s transfer business this summer and the latest move has them talking again.
The Daily Mail has revealed former Norwich City captain Sebastian Bassong is training with Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham ahead of a potential signing with the Blues, as the experienced boss continues to rebuild his defence.
Redknapp signed Bassong during his time with Tottenham Hotspur previously and is keen to bring the 31-year-old into his squad for the new season following two failed bids for Bristol City defender Aden Flint, who seems unlikely to be on the move.
It’s one of two free signings that Redknapp is looking to make before the the transfer window shuts next week, the other of which is former Blackburn midfielder Jason Lowe, and the boss has already confirmed his intention to sign Bassong.
‘Seb played for me, he’s a great lad and he’s going to come in and get himself fit ready to play somewhere. He’s on a free, he’s a good lad and a good player who played for me at Tottenham. He was player of the year at Norwich two years ago and he’s still a very good player in my opinion.’
Harry Redknapp may be mocked for making this move but an experienced head like Sebastian Bassong’s could be vital in Birmingham’s push to climb the Championship table this season and challenge for a promotion to the Premier League.
It’s no secret that Redknapp has been looking to bolster his defensive lines and Bassong’s services, available for nothing, is an opportunity that cannot be passed up. Maybe it works, maybe it fails. Regardless, it’s a move that makes sense.
