The Magpies have long been rumoured to covet the forward who has attracted glances from a number of clubs around Europe, meaning that there will be stiff competition for the player’s signature should he choose to leave Marseille this January. Chelsea, Schalke and Spurs are also thought to be tracking the player who first came on Newcastle’s radar due to the Magpies excellent scouting network in France.
The player himself has claimed that: “If I stay at Marseille, I will be the happiest man to be able to finish the season here. People talk about my departure, but we will see.” With the 25-year-old under contract until 2015 it would take a serious offer to convince the French club to sell the player, but they are understood to be open to negotiations should the right offer present itself.
Newcastle are of course bracing themselves for the departure of Demba Ba and are looking for alternative sources of goals and the Marseille player is thought to be top of their list.
