Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been quickly turning their attentions back to the Championship after seeing the Whites go down 3-1 to Leicester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
Thomas Christiansen’s men got past Port Vale, Newport County, and Burnley to book their place in the last 16, and they looked on course for another Premier League scalp when Pablo Hernandez gave them a 26th minute lead at the King Power Stadium. However, that only seemed to spur the Foxes on and goals from Kelechi Iheanacho, Islam Slimani, and Riyad Mahrez sealed victory for Michael Appleton’s side, and took them a step closer to winning the League Cup for the first time since 2000.
And although Leeds gave them a run for their money on Tuesday, several of our resident Whites fans are already focusing back on their Championship campaign and possible promotion to the Premier League, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Orlando Sentinel, which details some interesting comments from Orlando City striker Cyle Larin, a reported target of Leeds during the summer.
The 22-year-old made the move to the Major League Soccer side back in 2015 and has since gone from strength to strength with 44 goals in just 89 games for the club, including 18 in his first season at Orlando.
And this year saw him continue his fine goal-scoring form with 12 goals in 28 league appearances for the club, helping them to a tenth place finish in the Eastern Conference and to 18th place in the overall standings.
And his excellent exploits in the MLS attracted the interest of Christiansen’s Leeds over the summer, and they are likely to be encouraged by recent comments from Larin regarding his future.
He said: ‘I think I’m at the right place to go play in Europe and it’s the right time.
‘I think I’ll benefit. I have personal goals and dreams and I want to go to Europe and play. I think it’s the right time.’
These comments are sure to intrigue several of our resident Leeds fans and indeed alert the club’s hierarchy, but with other clubs also interested during the summer, they may need to act fast to bring the goal-scoring sensation to Elland Road.
Landlord’s verdict: Leeds United sold Chris Wood to Burnley during the summer and much was made about how they might struggle for goals in his absence.
And although that hasn’t quite happened just yet, the long, hard slog of a Championship season suggests that it might at some stage, so the Whites must be enthused by recent quotes from Cyle Larin, a reported summer target, that he wants to leave Major League Soccer side Orlando City.
With 44 goals in just 89 games for the club, the Canada international is hugely prolific and deadly in front of goal, and with Leeds arguably not possessing that out-an-out striker at present, he could be the man to lead them into the Premier League in the second half of the campaign.
