30-year-old Pedretti, who is a defensive midfielder and has 22 caps for France, is the current Auxerre captain, having joined from Olympique Lyonnais 4 and a half years ago.
The player, who won the French league with Lyon in 2006, was once hailed as the ‘new Didier Deschamps’ in France, where he has spent his whole career.
While he has not lived up the standards of current Marseille coach, Deschamps, Pedretti is a combative and experienced defensive midfielder who could help shore up Mark Hughes’s midfield.
It is not just the Cottagers who have shown an interest in Pedretti however, as Newcastle scout Graham Carr has been seen at the Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps in recent weeks.
Carr has been preparing reports for Alan Pardew, who is understood to be keen to add the Frenchman’s experience and tackling to his Newcastle squad.
