Derby County are flying high in the Sky Bet Championship, with Gary Rowett’s men pushing for the second automatic promotion spot behind runaway leaders, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Rams have looked exceptional since an excellent run of form began in late November, and fans here at The Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly confident that their side will be toasting promotion to the Premier League by May this year. The lads from the East Midlands are frequent visitors of The Tavern, and well liked by our resident landlord. Catching up for a chat over a pint or two, the current transfer window was the focus, with fans keen to see a couple of new additions this month to bolster their side ahead of the promotion run-in. Another attack minded midfielder was mentioned in order to relieve the pressure building upon Tom Lawrence, with many casting longing glances in the direction of Wigan Athletic’s, Nick Powell.
The 23-year-old, rated at £900k on Transfermarkt, has shone in the third tier this season, scoring an impressive eleven goals from the middle of the park, and looks too good to be plying his trade at that level. Certainly a Championship man with Premier League potential, the former Manchester United man looks ready to take the step up, and Derby should monitor the situation closely. Lawrence has performed well this season, but should the former Leicester man be ruled out, the Rams could be found to be lacking in his department. With Powell on the books, Rowett would have the depth in strength he needs to ensure Derby win promotion this season, and secure their long-awaited return to the top flight of the English game.
