The need for Leeds United to take maximum points from their final few Championship games will have only been further highlighted following their slip up at the weekend. The Whites are still within a strong position to win automatic promotion, however, there will be a few nerves around Elland Road as we head into the final stretch of the campaign.
But, that does not appear to have affected any of Marcelo Bielsa’s potential transfer plans this summer, with one man seemingly remaining on his radar and the club are now being considering ‘big rivals’ to others to land him.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Spanish media outlet El Gol Digital, Getafe are interested in signing Ander Iturraspe in the summer when his contract at Athletic Bilbao expires, as they may have to replace Mauro Arambarri.
However, the report says that Leeds are the La Liga outfit’s ‘biggest rival’, which could suggest that the Championship side have an excellent opportunity of bringing the 30-year-old to England in the summer – although Premier League football would likely have to be achieved.
Iturraspe is an excellent midfielder and one that Bielsa knows extremely well from their time at Athletic Bilbao together a number of years ago. With El Gol Digital claiming that Getafe could have to compete with Leeds, and given their current position in La Liga and their pursuit of Champions League football, that could mean the English side have a great chance of landing him.
With the player available on a free transfer in the summer, he could be ideal for the Whites to try and sign as there would be no risk of what paying a large sum of money could bring with it – although his wages are probably going to be significant.
As mentioned, he could be a player that fits straight into the set up at Elland Road as he already knows how Bielsa likes to operate and knows what the manager expects of his players, which could potentially allow him to come into the team with only a few teething problems, compared to others who may not exactly know what they are getting themselves involved in.
Iturraspe has an excellent passing ability when going forward, whilst his main attributes are his tackling and interception skills in front of the defence, which is something that others in the current Leeds team could look to learn from.
Admittedly, the idea of playing in Europe’s elite club competition will likely appeal to the 30-year-old, however, the chance to reunite with the manager that gave him his opportunity in the first place and figured as a key member of the side during his time at the club could persuade him to jump on a flight to England.
Leeds fans, do you think you could beat Getafe to Iturraspe’s signature? Or do you think he would choose to stay in Spain with the La Liga outfit? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
