With just two Championship matches left of the season, it would seem Leeds United are going to have to win promotion to the Premier League the hard way after two disappointing results.
Regardless of whether they do make a return to the top-flight or have to slum it back out in England’s second tier, Marcelo Bielsa’s side are going to have to make additions and one of the men thought to be on their radar should be considered a must in the summer.
What’s the News?
According to a report by L’Equipe, Leeds are just one of a handful of clubs thought to be interested in Brentford’s Yoann Barbet this summer.
The versatile defender is out of contract at Griffin Park at the end of what has been an impressive season, which has attracted interest from Norwich City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Angers and Montpellier.
Barbet has been outstanding for Brentford this season and it is no real surprise to see a host of clubs interested in the soon-to-be free agent this summer. And, Leeds must look to do all they can to convince him to join them at Elland Road.
The Whites have a desperate need to add centre-backs to their squad in the summer, regardless of whether they are playing Premier League football or not, as they have only have Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson as their recognised players.
Gaetano Berardi can also be used in a central role, however, he has been on the sidelines more often than not for Bielsa this season, leaving the Argentine extremely short of options for the majority of the campaign.
His versatility, as he can also play comfortably at left-back, should also make a deal for him a must, whilst signing him on a free transfer could prove to be good business sense as he is reliable at the back and knows English football very well following his four years at Griffin Park.
Without having to spend a transfer fee on him, Leeds would then have funds available to strengthen other areas of their squad to compete with the whatever opposition they will have to face at Elland Road next season.
Leeds fans, do you think Barbet would be a good addition at Elland Road? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
