Leeds set to sign Kieren Westwood on a free transfer

Leeds United are thought to be in need of a backup goalkeeper to provide cover and competition for Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

The Whites do not currently have one, with Jamal Blackman having suffered a serious leg break that meant he had to return to Chelsea.

However, it appears that the Elland Road outfit could be on the verge of adding an experienced shot-stopper to their ranks on a free transfer.

According to Tuesday’s Daily Mirror (page 53, via HITC Sport), Sheffield Wednesday outcast Kieren Westwood is expected to complete a move in January.

The Republic of Ireland international has been frozen out of Jos Luhukay’s squad and made his first appearance of the season on Monday for the Under-23s, which led to many questioning what the future held for him.

The Verdict:

Bringing Westwood to Elland Road would be an excellent deal for Leeds to complete and would be a huge addition to the side.

The experienced shot-stopper would be able to provide Peacock-Farrell with plenty of knowledge and would also be a suitable cover for the Northern Ireland international, should Marcelo Bielsa’s decide to replace him at any point.

With fans having called for him to join them, as well as being touted as a free transfer, it is a move that makes complete sense for Leeds United.
