If Leeds United had any hopes of trying to sign Ben White on a permanent transfer, they may have just been dashed.
According to a report by The Argus, Brighton and Hove Albion have no intention of letting the 21-year-old defender leave the club once his loan spell with the Whites is over.
Leeds were understood to have been keen to add a clause within his temporary stay last summer that would allow them to make the deal permanent, but the Seagulls would not allow that to happen (Football Insider).
Indeed, it would not be a surprise if Leeds were to look to try and sign White on a permanent deal again at some point. However, his excellent performances for the Elland Road outfit may have actually gone against the Championship outfit’s chances of making a deal happen.
The 22-year-old defender has been nothing but outstanding for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season as he has become a vital member of the backline.
A mainstay in the Argentine’s side, White has managed to achieve remarkable averages of 2.4 tackles, 3.3 interceptions and 3.6 clearances in his 11 Championship matches for the club so far (per WhoScored).
Indeed, his displays for the Peacocks have not only not gone unnoticed by Brighton, with Premier League giants Liverpool also thought to have taken an interest in how well the youngster has been performing (Football Insider).
Indeed, whilst White has been instrumental for Bielsa and Leeds this season, the Whites may have to accept that he will only be with them for the one campaign and face losing him next summer.
With Brighton thought to have been impressed with how he is performing in the Championship and with the likes of Liverpool also rumoured to be interested, even if he were to be made available, Leeds could end up facing a huge battle for his signature in the future.
Of course, there is plenty of time between now and the end of the season, so a lot can change, but if he continues to produce the type of displays he is currently, keeping hold of White will likely be almost impossible.
