Leeds United are thought to be prepared to target Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle this summer should Kemar Roofe depart, according to a report by The Daily Star.
The Magpies are thought to be open to letting their forward leave on loan once again this summer as Steve Bruce’s side have upgraded their attacking options throughout the summer.
Roofe has become a recent target of R.S.C. Anderlecht’s and is thought to be closing on a deal worth over £5m for the forward, per Football Insider.
Losing Roofe could be a disastrous thing for Marcelo Bielsa’s side ahead of the upcoming campaign, but replacing him with Gayle could be exactly what the doctor ordered for the Whites’ chances of obtaining promotion to the Premier League once and for all.
The current Leeds man finished as the club’s top goalscorer with 15 in the last campaign, whereas his strike partner Patrick Bamford only managed to find the back of the net on ten occasions, although last summer’s addition did miss 24 matches because of injury and suspension (Transfermarkt).
However, Gayle has a considerably better record in the Championship and almost helped West Bromwich Albion return to the top-flight last season. The 28-year-old bagged himself 24 goals in his 41 appearances across all competitions (Transfermarkt), further adding to his impressive tally in the division.
In 100 matches in England’s second tier, the forward has netted 59 times, whereas he has only hit 21 goals in his 99 Premier League appearances so far (Transfermarkt).
Gayle would also appear to be a popular choice amongst the Leeds fans as well, as The72 noted in one of their fan reaction articles.
Don Goodman was also full of praise for the forward when he was at West Brom, stating that he would guarantee goals in the Championship whilst also highlighting his pace.
“I’m a big admirer of Dwight Gayle,” he told the Express and Star back in 2018. “It was a brilliant move getting him in, he’s a guarantee of goals at Championship level.
“I personally believe, given an opportunity at the higher level, he will score goals. He never got a consistent chance at Crystal Palace or Newcastle. He’s got a bit of pace about him, and he can stick the ball in the back of the net.”
With him seemingly being out of favour at Newcastle, a loan move to Leeds could benefit both Gayle and the Whites in the upcoming campaign.
Should Roofe depart, it would be likely that the 28-year-old would be one of the first names on Bielsa’s teamsheet each week because of his ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis, whilst his experience could finally help the Elland Road outfit win promotion to the top-flight.
Having not featured for Newcastle in their pre-season campaign so far, it would appear Gayle’s future at St. James’ Park is non-existent, although whether Leeds look to make a move for him remains to be seen.
