Leeds United could see Jack Clarke return to Tottenham Hotspur in January, according to Phil Hay of The Athletic (subscription required).
Spurs are believed to have inserted the option to recall the teenager in the winter.
Leeds received a transfer fee of around £10m for their former winger (Telegraph), but the Premier League outfit immediately sent him back to Elland Road to continue his development for another season.
There could be a real danger that Clarke does, indeed, return to Tottenham this summer as he is yet to have featured for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season in the Championship – the £5.4m-rated winger (Transfermarkt) has made an outing in the Carabao Cup so far.
The 18-year-old was considered to be a breakthrough star at Leeds last season, as he made 25 appearances for the Whites and contributed with two goals and two assists to help take his side to the play-offs.
However, with how the EFL’s loan rules are (only five loanees are allowed in the matchday squad of 18), the youngster could struggle to have the same opportunities he was afforded last season.
Ben White and Jack Harrison appear to have become mainstays in Bielsa’s side so far, whilst the likes of Illan Meslier, Eddie Nketiah and Helder Costa are also available to the Argentine this season. Those three men are all likely going to be included in the first-team picture in some capacity, seemingly making it a little difficult for Clarke to fit in somewhere.
Leeds will face penalty sanctions if they do not play the Arsenal loanee, whilst Costa also has a clause in his current loan deal to turn his move into a permanent transfer, so it is unlikely the Whites will want to upset him before considering whether to exercise that option.
Obviously, that could all change because of injuries and the fact that the Argentine manager already knows what to expect from the winger, but his future at Elland Road does appear to be a little bleak at the moment.
However, if all the loanees manage to stay fit, then Clarke could find it extremely difficult to break into the team and may have to head back to Tottenham with very little football under his belt.
