Marcelo Bielsa has revealed Kemar Roofe will be leaving Leeds United this summer following a pre-match interview with Sky Sports ahead of their 3-1 victory against Bristol City.
The Argentine, who was speaking via a translator, admitted his side would be in a bit of difficulty as the forward (as well as Bailey Peacock-Farrell) will have left them before the end of the transfer window.
“We are in a few difficulties because finally Roofe and (Bailey) Peacock-Farrell leave, they were in the squad of 18 players we chose before,” he said.
Anderlecht are thought to be closing in on a deal for Roofe and Bielsa also revealed he ‘can’t be happy’ to see his striker leave Elland Road.
Quoted by BBC Sport, he said: “I can’t be happy if Roofe leaves. If I tell you this when he scored 15 goals last season, I would be stupid.”
“We have to adapt if it finally happens.”
Although Leeds may not have missed him in their victory against Bristol City on Sunday, Roofe’s departure would have to be considered a huge blow to their chances of obtaining promotion to the Premier League – especially if they fail to replace him before the deadline.
Lee Johnson may believe that the Whites could ‘win the division’ with the squad they currently have if they remain fit after watching his side be decimated by them at Ashton Gate, however the outgoing striker is one individual that had a huge impact for the Yorkshire-based outfit last season.
Despite his issues with injuries (Yorkshire Evening Post), Roofe had finished as the club’s top goalscorer with 15 in the last campaign, something the manager lamented in regards to his other players as the campaign went on. Bielsa himself blamed the lack of finishing as one of the main reasons his side weren’t promoted.
Patrick Bamford managed to bag just ten goals last season, although he has started this season in fine form as he powered a header home in the game against Bristol City at the weekend, but there is not much depth to the attacking ranks beyond him at the moment (Transfermarkt).
It is completely understandable as to why Bielsa cannot be happy in regards to selling Roofe this summer as it means he will be down a potent attacking threat that his side will need if they are to finally get out of the Championship.
With Pontus Jansson and Peacock-Farrell having already been shifted on as well, the Argentine is already having to deal with losing some important players to his squad and despite a brilliant opening day showing against Bristol City, if Leeds fail to replace their striker this summer, it could be a very long and disappointing campaign once again for the Elland Road outfit.
