Marcelo Bielsa has been very vocal about Victor Orta’s role in bringing Eddie Nketiah to Leeds United this summer.
The Whites have confirmed the Arsenal forward will spend the whole season on loan at Elland Road as they look to bolster their attacking ranks following the departure of Kemar Roofe to Anderlecht.
Bielsa had some glowing comments about Nketiah’s talent and potential, although he also alluded to Orta’s involvement in helping to get the temporary deal done.
“Nketiah is a young, important player in English football. He’s a player with a very good reputation with other football people,” he was quoted as saying by Leeds Live. “He can be an important player in English football according to others. Abraham, at Villa, Wilson at Derby, Harrison in our case. We think this player has similar features to these names. I know a lot of clubs want him.
“It’s the same case as with White, he came from Orta. He arrives to the club. Something not easy. We have to link the player to the management of Orta. With dimension Leeds have a club.”
Orta’s role appears to have been crucial in helping to bring Nketiah to Elland Road this summer and it appears the Director of Football has the contacts to help Bielsa potentially improve his squad for the upcoming campaign.
Orta has not always had the best track record when it comes down to the additions he has brought into the club which has angered fans in the past as Football FanCast noted in a fan reaction article. However, those feelings may be about to change.
As BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein noted on Twitter, the Spaniard appears to have a close relationship with the Arsenal manager Unai Emery, although a deal might have been helped because of the respect the Gunners boss has for the Leeds manager.
Speaking back in January, Emery publicly stated how much he respects Bielsa and believes the manager is one of the best coaches in the world (Goal via Facebook).
He said: “I know he is obsessed but also very professional towards his work,” he said when speaking about the ‘Spygate’ saga.
“I respect him immensely because he is (one of) the best coaches in the world. He has always worked like that in his career.”
As noted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Orta has acquired the likes of Pontus Jansson and Mateusz Klich who have been rather successful at Elland Road, but he has also signed the likes of Felix Wiedwald, Caleb Ekuban, Izzy Brown and Vurnon Anita who weren’t really able to get going.
Which category Nketiah will fall in will remain to be seen as the Championship season goes on, but if it was not for the Director of Football’s connections and prior relationships, perhaps, the deal would never have materialised.
Leeds fans, how crucial of a role do you think Orta has played in helping to bring Nketiah to the club? Let us know your thoughts by sharing them in the comments section below!
