Vurnon Anita’s chances of leaving Leeds United this summer appear to have stalled, according to a report by SDNA.
It had been stated by Football Insider that a deal was expected to be concluded sometime this week, but it seems a problem has come ahead.
It is claimed the midfielder’s wage demands are a problem for Panathinaikos as the 30-year-old is thought to be holding out for at least €700,000-a-year (£630,000), which is something the Greek side are not believed to be able to offer.
In turn, Anita’s head has turned to the possibility of playing his football in America for an MLS outfit. However, Leeds are not thought to have received any offers for the player as of yet.
Things really have not worked out for Anita during his time at Elland Road and it is hardly a surprise that a move is being pursued.
Marcelo Bielsa made it rather clear the 30-year-old former Holland international was not a part of his plans when he arrived as he sent him out on loan to Willem II last summer.
He would have been hoping that things would go in his favour when the Argentine had arrived, as he had only been used sparingly during Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom’s respective tenures. Anita managed just 22 appearances during his two-year spell at the club (Transfermarkt).
He later admitted to Dutch press that his time at Elland Road had felt like a “dead-end” and that he did not want to remain with Leeds if Bielsa had no plans for him moving forward.
However, it seems offloading him could be more difficult than originally envisioned, especially if Anita is holding out for a sum of money that Panathinaikos are unable to offer.
Leeds, and you would have to imagine Anita, would have been hoping for a quick resolution when it came down for a transfer. However, that does not appear to be the case at the present moment in time.
Whether there is any concrete interest from the MLS remains to be seen, but the Whites must be hoping they are able to work a deal for the 30-year-old as soon as possible as there is no point keeping him on the club’s books any longer than is necessary.
