They had also backed up claims that Leeds had overtaken Newcastle United in the race for the South American this summer.
Young strikers appear to be the order for Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds this summer as Colidio and Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah appear to have been linked with switches to Elland Road in recent days.
With Kemar Roofe having departed for Anderlecht (club’s official website), the Whites clearly have a need for additional firepower and a player that can find the back of the net on a regular basis.
Colidio may not have had the chance to play senior first-team football yet, however he has proved he can be effective in front of goal at youth level. He was highly successful with Inter Milan’s academy side in their UEFA Youth League campaign as he managed to score a goal in every single game he played, bagging five in total (Transfermarkt) and is thought to have been admired by Bielsa in the past.
The Argentine has also been tipped for stardom in the past and has earned a glowing comparison to one of the country’s most gifted attackers in the form of Gonzalo Higuain by World Football Scouting in 2018. He may be struggling now, but the 31-year-old does have a record of 295 goals in 587 appearances.
Bielsa is clearly someone who does not shy away from youth and puts plenty of faith in those that are still in the infancy of their playing career (as noted by The Times) as he adopts the mantra of ‘if you’re good enough, you’re old enough’.
However, there will also be a risk involved if Colidio does arrive at Leeds this summer as there will be an expectation on him to find the back of the net on a regular basis. Roofe was the Whites’ top goalscorer last season with 15 and the Argentine himself blamed the lack of finishing as one of the main reasons his side weren’t promoted last season.
It would seem as though Colidio could be joining Bielsa at Leeds in the near future and it will be interesting to see how he performs considering he has no prior experience of competitive first-team football.
It would hardly be a surprise if there are concerns about whether the 19-year-old attacker will be able to make the step up and provide the Whites with the firepower they badly need following Roofe’s departure, but with Bielsa’s guidance, anything could be possible.
