Leeds United: Whites reignite interest in Karl Darlow

Leeds United are set to reignite their interest in Newcastle United’s Karl Darlow this summer, according to a report by Football Insider.

The goalkeeper was heavily linked (Football Insider) with a move to Elland Road in the winter, however, Rafa Benitez was not prepared to let the player leave St. James’ Park as he provided cover for Martin Dubravka.

Kiko Casilla was brought in by Marcelo Bielsa instead, however, there are suggestions that the former Real Madrid man could be offloaded after an underwhelming six-month spell in Yorkshire.

However, it is said a move for Darlow will not take place unless Leeds find a buyer for the Spaniard.

Casilla certainly did not do the job that was required of him last season as he managed to keep just six clean sheets in his first 19 games for the Leeds (via Transfermarkt). He was also guilty of huge mistakes in their play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County, which led to David Prutton criticising him.

After that disappointment, it is should not come as a surprise to hear that Bielsa wants to try again in his attempts to bring Darlow to the club this summer should the Spaniard be sold.

The 28-year-old played a crucial role for the Toon Army during their stint in the Championship and was arguably one of the club’s most important players in their title-winning campaign. He kept 13 clean sheets in his 34 second-tier matches, conceding just 32 goals as they made a swift return to the Premier League in the 2016/17 season.

With the Newcastle shot-stopper’s contract entering the final 12 months, the Magpies should be prepared to cash in on him this summer, although any move may depend on who is brought in as the club’s new manager.

Leeds fans, do you think Darlow’s experience can help the club finally achieve promotion to the Premier League? Let us know your thoughts by sharing them with us in the comments section below!
