There is no doubt that Leeds United’s final eight matches in the Championship this season will be the biggest in the club’s recent history. Their loss against Sheffield United will have come as a blow, however, the Whites cannot simply dwell on it with the tough home fixture against Millwall to come at the weekend.
When considering how the campaign has gone for the club overall, Marcelo Bielsa has done some remarkable things with the group of players he has at his disposal, including bringing through the youngsters and putting them in the first-team, where they have gone on to excel.
Victor Orta has also managed to play a role and has helped to acquire some exciting talent for the future and it appears the duo could look to try and bring another prospect to Thorp Arch.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Tuttomercatoweb, Leeds are interested in PSV Eindhoven’s Justin Lonwijk as Bielsa continues to monitor the situation surrounding the 19-year-old.
However, the Argentine will have to be quick if he wants to land the midfielder as a number of clubs are thought to be interested in the starlet whose contract is set to expire in the summer.
AS Roma are thought to be in the initial phase of looking to sign Lonwijk, whilst Eintracht Frankfurt are already understood to have made contact, although PSV are keen to tie him down to a new deal.
There is clearly interest in Lonwijk that would suggest that he is a player that has an incredibly bright future ahead of him, despite not having played any senior football for the Eredivisie outfit yet.
Leeds appear to have made it a priority of theirs over recent years, with Orta bringing in a number of youngsters from all corners of the world to try and build their options for the future and the 19-year-old looks like a player who could certainly fit that mould at the club.
The teenager could thrive under Bielsa, who could look to put him in his first-team as he has lacked an attacking midfielder with creativity at times this season and is not scared of handing a youngster his chance if he feels he is good enough to make an impression – just look at Jack Clarke.
Indeed, with the likes of Roma and Frankfurt both heavily involved in trying to sign him, it could be a really tough battle for the Elland Road outfit to land him and making sure they are in the Premier League next season may go a long way into bringing him to Yorkshire.
But, there will surely be a sense of caution about whether the Dutchman would be a signing worth making as Leeds have had a patchy record when it comes to signing youngsters to their academy ranks.
Mateusz Bogusz recently joined and looks an exciting prospect, but for example, Yosuke Ideguchi has really failed to get going and his transfer decision looks nothing short of a disaster considering how things have turned out for the Japan international.
Leeds fans, what do you make of Lonwijk? Do you think he could be another exciting youngster or would you be concerned that he could turn into another flop for the club? Let us know your thoughts by joining in with the discussion below.
