Matt Penney admits he’d love to sign a new deal at Sheff Wed

Sheffield Wednesday have managed to put a run of positive results together and will be looking to continue that when they play West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday night.

Jos Luhukay’s side looked destined to be involved in a relegation fight at the beginning of the season after a couple of bad results, however, the Owls appear to have turned things around.

The Hillsborough outfit have tasted just one defeat in their last seven Championship matches and will be heading into their home encounter with the Baggies with the confidence of getting a positive result.

And, one man who has featured for Wednesday this season is Matt Penney and appears to have grabbed his chance with both hands.

The left-back was handed his opportunity by Luhukay at the start of the season and has gone on to shine for the Owls with his performances.

The 20-year-old’s current deal expires next summer, however, he has told the Sheffield Star that he would like to extend it in the future.

“I’ve not really thought about it. I’m just focusing on the games and working hard. I’d love to sign a new deal with this club,” he said.

The Verdict:

Penney is an exciting talent and should he continue to improve, he could look to have a bright future in the game.

Fans have been impressed with the 20-year-old’s performances for the club already and will be delighted with what the £180k-rated (as per Transfermarkt) defender has stated.

With under a year left on his current deal, Wednesday should look to tie him down for a number of years and continue his development.

If they were to fail to offer him a new contract, the Owls could end up losing him to a possible rival, as it is likely he will have a number of options to choose from.
