It was only a week ago that we at the Football Transfer Tavern were discussing the fact that Xavi and Cristian Tello were set to pen new deals at Barcelona and now it has been reported by just about every media outlet including The Guardian that the sensational Lionel Messi and skipper Carlos Puyol have followed suit.
Messi who must now be a cert for the World Player of the Year award has been in talks with the club he grew up at in recent weeks, negotitating a deal that will keep him at the Catalan giants for the majority of his career – until the player is 31 to be precise. It is expected that he will then head back to his homeland in Argentina.
The deal will take Messi through to 2018 and will skyrocket him to the top of the pile financially. The deal is heavily performance incentivised with his bonuses for one season being added on to his basic pay for the next – and with the success the club have, it is easy to see how this will add up.
Skipper Carles Puyol has faced injury issues in the last couple of seasons but he is still vital to the club when fit and has inked a deal that takes him to the grand old age of 38 – meaning that the dogged defender will see out his career at the club.
It was reported that the deals would be penned after Christmas but with both players and the club happy and keen to extend the current contracts, it has been much quicker than anticipated giving the fans something to enjoy over the winter break (as if being 13 clear of bitter rivals Real Madrid was not enough already!)
