Did Leeds United blow their chances of winning automatic promotion at the weekend? The defeat to former boss Garry Monk and Birmingham City will have hurt, especially considering Norwich City and Sheffield United both picked up three points.
With just six games of the Championship season, the pressure is firmly on at Elland Road for the Whites to secure a top-two spot, otherwise, they will have to go through the dreaded play-off system and that is something Marcelo Bielsa’s side must firmly look to avoid.
Leeds will need to make some major additions in the summer and one player’s agent has revealed his client would like to play for the Argentine manager, however, he also suggested there could be a potential caveat to the deal.
What’s the News?
Speaking to El Crack Deportivo in Argentina, Nahitan Nandez’s agent Pablo Bentancur has revealed that his client would like to play for Bielsa and admitted it would be an easy decision to make because of his previous relationships with the manager and the club president – Andrea Radrizzani.
“I prefer to leave it as an alternative option,” said Bentancur about a move to Cagliari. “I spoke with important clubs in Europe, and he told me that he would like to play with Bielsa and it is easy to understand why. I have a relationship with the coach, with the previous president and the current one and it would be a pleasure to be under the orders of Bielsa.”
However, he also added that Leeds would have to be playing in the Premier League for a move to happen, as he did not see Nandez playing second-tier football.
“Logically, Nandez is not a player for Serie B,” he added when asked about whether Leeds had to be in the top-flight.
Bentancur’s comments clearly appear to put Leeds in the driving seat in regards to signing Nandez in the summer, however, it would seem that they have some work to do on the pitch to ensure that they are able to make a deal happen.
The midfielder would certainly have to be considered somewhat a statement signing and one that the Whites would surely benefit from having in their squad next season if they are in the Premier League.
The Uruguay international has been turning heads with his performances for Boca Juniors this season and his country, especially during the World Cup where he helped his national team to a place in the quarter-finals.
The 23-year-old is extremely talented and could be the type of player that would thrive under the guidance of Bielsa. A box-to-box midfielder, he has plenty of tenacity to offer, whilst he is not scared about going forward and providing options for his team-mates.
Nandez has an excellent ability of winning the ball back quickly as well with his pressing technique, something that the Argentine boss likes to get out of his current crop of players at Elland Road.
Leeds fans, what do you make of Bentancur’s comments? How excited would you be to see Nandez at Elland Road next season? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
