Newcastle to battle Sunderland in attempts to seal £4m Swede deal

The flames of the North East derby need very little fanning indeed, though the proverbial transfer window promises to do just that.

Despite the Toon Army’s relegation to the Championship (at the expense of the Black Cats), the Magpies in the Transfer Tavern are buoyed by a fresh sense of optimism.

Their fierce rivals may have Premier League status, though the nature of the ever churning rumour mill has suggested the two could be at loggerheads over a transfer target.

According to Italian outlet Gazza Mercatothe Tyne-Wear neighbours are ready to scrap it out for Filip Helander of Hellas Verona.

The Swedish under-21 international is a central defender of some regard, though the Serie A club could be forced to sell in order to raise cash.

Reportedly valued at around £4m by Gialloblu, the 23-year old has Champions League experience from his time with Malmo.

Where would Helander fit in better, Newcastle or Sunderland? Let us know below…
