After a poor start to the season Nigel Adkins’ position as Southampton boss is publicly under threat and will desperately need to bolster his squad in January if he stands any chance of staying. After conceding 29 goals already this season it’s clear that some better defenders are needed and harder work on the training ground, but they have also failed to create the attacking threat they showed at the start of the season.
The Saints are reportedly plotting a £2million bid for Millwall’s attacking midfielder Liam Trotter who has made an impressive start to the campaign with 6 goals already. Adkins will know what Trotter is capable of having already signed him on loan during his time at Scunthorpe, but it remains to be seen if he can carry this form into the premier league. With Gaston Ramirez just returning from injury, it leaves them lacking quality in Midfield and the majority of pressure on Lallana, Puncheon and Lambert to come up with goods.
Fulham are also interested in Trotter’s services and are still looking for replacements for Dempsey and Dembele. Berbatov and Ruiz have made great starts but they will miss the goals from midfield that the duo provided, which would be eased by the addition of Trotter. They will also look at making a few more signings and be in serious contention for European football.
