Potentially heartening transfer reports emerge for dejected Newcastle fans

Newcastle United supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing the Magpies suffer a second successive Premier League defeat on Saturday following a 1-0 loss to Bournemouth at St James’ Park.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the South Coast outfit off the back of losing 1-0 to Sean Dyche’s Burnley last week, but they would have been seeking home comforts against Eddie Howe’s 19th place Cherries on Saturday. Yet the North East giants were lacklustre and suffered a fifth Premier League loss of the campaign when Steve Cook headed home in injury time to secure a 1-0 success for Howe’s men, thus moving them out of the bottom three while at the same time instigating Newcastle’s fall to 13th in the table.

Thus, our resident Magpies fans have been very quiet and dejected in the Tavern this week, although many may well be heartened by a recent report from The Northern Echo, which suggests that their side will reignite their interest in Fulham playmaker Tom Cairney in the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old moved to Craven Cottage back in 2015 after a short stint at Blackburn Rovers, and played a key part in helping Slavisa Jokanovic’s men reach the Championship play-offs last term with 12 goals and 11 assists in 45 league appearances.

And although the Cottagers were unable to get past Reading in the semi-finals of the end-of-season lottery, thus missing out on a return to the Premier League, the Scotland international was linked with a move to the top-flight with Benitez’s Newcastle, who of course won the second tier title last term.

And although no move materialised, the Magpies do not appear to be giving up as recent reports suggest that they will reignite their interest in the midfielder when the window reopens in the New Year.

Benitez’s men have struggled creatively at times this season and may see Cairney as an answer to those troubles, although whether they can indeed lure the 26-year-old to the North East in January remains to be seen.

Landlord’s verdict: Much was made of Newcastle United’s struggles in the summer window, with the club seemingly failing to land several top transfer targets.

And one man who was linked with a move to St James’ Park, but ultimately didn’t get it, was Fulham’s Tom Cairney, who was outstanding for the Cottagers in their ascent to sixth place in the Championship last term.

And although injury problems have blighted his 2017/18 campaign, the Magpies are reportedly looking to reignite their interest in him in January in a bid to bolster their own attacking options, what with Rafa Benitez’s side having managed just ten Premier League goals so far this season.

And with Fulham struggling this season in the Championship, Newcastle must look to exploit that to bring Cairney to the North East.
