Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s return to Championship action this evening when they host Chris Wilder’s high-flying Sheffield United at Elland Road.
Thomas Christiansen’s men were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the fourth round stage by Leicester City in midweek, but put in a decent enough performance against the Foxes to give them some confidence ahead of the Blades’ visit. The Whites sit a place and four points behind this evening’s opponents having won seven of their 13 Championship matches, while Wilder’s side have picked up nine victories from their 13 games, including four wins from their last five league clashes.
Thus, excitement is building among our resident Leeds fans in the Tavern, and they are likely to be further intrigued and encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Mail, which suggests that they, alongside Hull City and Middlesbrough, are keeping tabs on Sturm Graz midfielder James Jeggo.
The 25-year-old Australian made the move to the Austrian outfit back in 2016 after beginning his career in his homeland, and he has since gone on to make 51 appearances for the top tier side, of which 31 came in their run to a third place finish in the Austrian Bundesliga last term.
And with 11 appearances so far this season, Jeggo continues to play a key role at Sturm Graz, but has reportedly rejected the club’s new offer of a contract, and with his current one set to expire in the summer, his future has thus been plunged into huge uncertainty.
And it’s uncertainty that Christiansen’s Leeds, as well as Leonid Slutsky’s Hull and Garry Monk’s Middlesbrough, are seeking to exploit by reportedly keeping tabs on the 25-year-old, knowing that he can sign a pre-contract agreement in the New Year.
But whether the Whites are able to beat their Championship rivals to Jeggo’s signature very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Thomas Christiansen has made a fine start to life as Leeds United head coach, although things have become slightly trickier in recent weeks given their underwhelming run of form.
Nonetheless, victory over Bristol City and a fine showing against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup earlier this week has given our resident Leeds fans renewed confidence in their side, but it does seem that the Whites are already looking ahead to coming transfer windows in a bid to bolster their ranks.
And one man they are reportedly monitoring is Sturm Graz’s James Jeggo, what with the 25-year-old out of contract at the end of the season but refusing to pen a new deal with the Austrian club.
A pre-contract agreement could thus take place in January, and although he wouldn’t be available to help Leeds this term, he may well have the midfield quality required to make a difference for the Whites over the coming years.
