Real Madrid starlet commits to club

Whilst all anyone can discuss in the Football Transfer Tavern today is the Champions League and Europa League draws, there is also a rather interesting bit of information in Marca that we cannot let slip through our nets. Real Madrid’s Russian youngster Denis Cheryshev has turned his back on a move to his homeland in favour of penning a new deal.

Primarily competing for the Real Madrid reserve ranks (Castilla), the Russian has been raising eyebrows with his form this season and has even made first team appearances under Jose Mourinho, leading to bids from a host of Russian clubs who want to take the player back to his homeland. The teams interested in the player are hardly small time either with both CSKA Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg interested in the youngster who has rejected a salary of 2.5 million euros to stay with Los Blancos and establish himself.

As our landlord notes, half the interest in Cheryshev from the Russian league is down to their rules on foreign players and the rule forcing them to play at least four Russians week in, week out – meaning that Russian prospects are always on the bigger club’s radar.

For his part, Cheryshev has been at the Spanish champions for eleven seasons now and is determined to make his name there and not return to his homeland no matter how much money is on the table. Seen as a bright prospect by the Real Madrid hierarchy, the left winger sees Spain as his home, claiming he “feels more Spanish than Russian” and is set to stay for the foreseeable future.
