Sheffield Wednesday are thought to be taking a keen interest in one of non-league football’s brightest prospects.
It is understood Jos Luhukay looked at the 20-year-old in the summer and had undergone a trial with the club, as he currently is with Sunderland at the moment.
Smart has been impressing for Basingstoke, scoring 20 goals and providing 28 assists in 41 games last season for the Dragons, which also earned him an England C squad call-up.
The 20-year-old would give Wednesday some extra options up front as well, with him being versatile enough to play up front or in an attacking midfield role.
The Owls have been struggling in front of goal this season, having netted just 22 in their 18 Championship fixtures so far.
There is no doubt that Smart looks to have a bright future ahead of him within the Football League.
He would not cost the club a fortune to bring to Hillsborough, although he would not likely head straight into the first-team and will spend some time developing, which would not necessarily be a bad thing considering how Jordan Thorniley and Matt Penney have turned out.
However, with Sunderland having taken Smart on a trial, it remains to be seen if Luhukay can tempt him to join them in Yorkshire, should he want to add him to his squad.
