It is always frustrating to see a player thrive in the division for someone else when you had the opportunity to sign him yourselves. And, that’s what appears to have happened to Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa.
What will be even more annoying is the fact that the player played for a club the Whites have a relationship with in terms of bright prospects and, well, miss out on him whilst he is right under your nose.
What’s the News?
According to Football Insider, senior officials at the club are angry that the club failed to spot the potential Emiliano Buendia had and did not use their relationship with Cultural Leonesa to sign him after he excelled during a loan spell with them.
Norwich City decided to snap him up and the Argentine has since thrived in the Championship, playing a key role in their quest for promotion to the Premier League.
Isn’t the whole point of having feeder clubs the idea that you can use the relationship between the two parties to an advantage and help pick out emerging talents before anyone else gets a sniff?
It is completely understandable to hear that there is anger amongst the senior officials at Leeds, especially considering how well Buendia has taken to life in England’s second tier. Norwich brought him to the Championship in the summer for a fee of around £1.5million from Getafe, which is now appearing to be a bargain.
The 22-year-old has been hugely influential for the Canaries this season, having scored eight goals and has provided his team-mates with 11 assists in his 36 appearances so far.
And, you would have to imagine those figures would have had every chance of being replicated (or even bettered) under Bielsa at Elland Road. Buendia would have certainly have got the game-time he has had at Carrow Road and he would have made Samu Saiz’s decision to leave in the winter even less of a concern as he could have been doing the business as a playmaker that the Whites have missed.
Leeds truly let this one slip through the net, so it would not be a surprise to see them take a closer look at their feeder clubs in the future and use this as a lesson that they do not want to repeat again.
