Sheffield Wednesday could be about to face some unwanted interest in one of their key men this winter, with one of their Championship rivals believed to have highlighted him.
According to a report by The Daily Mirror, Dean Smith is understood to be keen on bringing Barry Bannan back to Aston Villa and has made it his main priority to land the creative midfielder in January.
The Scotland international has been instrumental for the Owls this season and it has been clear that his absence has been felt when he has been unable to play for them.
Jos Luhukay will surely be keen on keeping the £2.7million-rated ace, as per Transfermarkt, at Hillsborough, however, it is understood that the Villans could test their resolve with an offer in the region of £8m.
Bannan originally left Aston Villa in 2013 for a switch to Crystal Palace, however, he then joined Wednesday in 2015 and has since racked up over 120 appearances for the Owls.
The fact that Bannan only recently signed a new long-term deal just a matter of months ago could go in Sheffield Wednesday’s favour.
However, it is no secret that the club’s financial situation is a little precarious and the club could look to use the sale of, arguably, their best player to help ease those concerns.
But, should they look to cash in on him in January, it would likely have an adverse effect on their current campaign, in which up until the last international break, had looked good for a Championship playoff spot.
