If Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of securing a play-off spot at the end of the season where relatively slim before the weekend, the defeat to Aston Villa may have effectively ended any hopes.
Steve Bruce has managed to achieve some truly remarkable things at Hillsborough during his time with the Championship outfit, however, with promotion appearing as unlikely as ever, he will have to consider making some changes to his squad.
With Financial Fair Play regulations likely to be at the forefront of the club’s mind, it would not be a surprise to see a number of departures and it appears they are already looking to offload one striker from their books.
What’s the News?
The Sun (print edition 7 April 2019, page 61, via HITC Sport) is claiming that Sheffield Wednesday will look to sell Lucas Joao in the summer.
However, it is understood the Owls want a hefty fee for the nine-goal striker as they are looking for a figure in the region of £8million.
Joao has had a rather decent campaign, although there will be some feeling at Hillsborough that his goal return could be a little better than the nine he currently has.
The 25-year-old has had a rather injury-hit season as well, which obviously has not helped his chances of making a bigger impression, as he has made just 15 starts and has not featured for Bruce since February.
With Steven Fletcher currently leading the line, and with a number of forwards in the squad, it is not a surprise to hear that that area of the pitch is one that could be targeted by Bruce’s axe in the summer.
£8m is quite a large fee with all things considered, however, with the clear need to balance the books financially, as well as the need to reduce numbers in the squad, it is not too hard to see why they would allow the Portuguese forward to go should they receive an offer for him in the summer.
Sheffield Wednesday fans, would you be willing to let Joao go in the summer? Do you think anyone will pay £8m for him? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
