Sheffield Wednesday linked with move for Gary Cahill

Sheffield Wednesday are thought to be lining up a shock move for a Premier League defender this January.

According to a report by The Sun, the Owls are considering to line-up a move for Chelsea’s Gary Cahill.

The former England enforcer has made it known that he is keen to leave the Stamford Bridge outfit this winter if his game-time under Maurizio Sarri does not improve and that has alerted a host of clubs.

Jos Luhukay’s side are the latest to be linked, and although it would appear unlikely, the Hillsborough outfit could look to use the emotional ties they have with Cahill, as he supported the team as a boy.

However, they will need to compete with the likes of Aston Villa and Manchester United, which could appeal to the 32-year-old as it is believed he is keen to remain in the Premier League and could look to reunite with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

The Verdict:

This particular transfer rumour of Cahill and Sheffield Wednesday appears to be a little far-fetched and extremely unlikely to happen.

The former England man, who is rated at £13.5million by Transfermarkt, is likely to have a number of options available to him, should Sarri allow him to depart Stamford Bridge.

Wednesday need to add to their defensive ranks, however, Cahill’s wage demands are likely to be too high for the Owls to consider, especially as they have been on the wrong side of the Financial Fair Play rules recently as well.
