Steve Bruce looks to have lost the race to bring a hugely experienced defender to Sheffield Wednesday.
According to a report by TeamTALK, Efe Ambrose is set to snub a move to The Owls and join fellow Championship side Derby County.
Frank Lampard’s side are thought to have swooped in to offer the enforcer a short-term deal as they look to win promotion to the Premier League.
The Nigeria international is a free agent after leaving Hibernian last month and can still move freely to another club despite the window being closed.
Having represented his country and Celtic at some of the highest levels in football, the 30-year-old was believed to have been in high demand, with Bruce keen to have him at Hillsborough.
Ambrose can play in either a centre-back role or as a right-back, which would have added some much-needed experience to their back line.
The news will have been disappointing for Bruce and Sheffield Wednesday, however, they did manage to recruit rather successfully in January.
The likes of Dominic Iorfa and Lazaar Achraf joined on Deadline Day to help bolster those positions significantly.
There is no doubt Ambrose would have been able to do a job for The Owls at Hillsborough this season, however, it appears he will be in Championship action at Pride Park instead.
