Sunderland flop leaves Stadium of Light to join Besiktas in £4.5m deal

Sunderland got off to a decent start in their Championship debut on Friday evening as they held promotion-chasing Derby County to a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.

It’s safe to say Simon Grayson’s team are pretty unfancied in the division this season having been restricted with the money they can spend but the draw represented a very good start to the campaign.

They were industrious, worked hard and in all honesty, looked like the better team throughout.

But one man that didn’t feature was Dutch forward Jeremain Lens, who has today completed a transfer, rumoured to be in the region of £4.5million, to Turkish giants Besiktas.

The Turkish title-chasers haven’t mucked around this summer, signing Lens, Alvaro Negredo, Pep and Gokhan Tore as they look to become champions once again.

The Sunderland fans here in the Tavern aren’t too fussed about Lens leaving and are hoping this money might be put towards bringing someone else in.

Landlord’s Verdict

Jermemain Lens was a poor signing for Sunderland and never showed what we’ve seen from him in the past.

A pacy, skilful individual, his performances left a lot to be desired during his time in the North East and Sunderland are probably better off getting him off the wage bill.

Time to move on and concentrate on the season.
