Leeds United supporters were left drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern on Tuesday night after seeing their side lose to Cardiff City.
Thomas Christiansen’s men went into that top-of-the-table clash at the summit of the Championship having won six of their opening nine matches, but were well off the pace against Neil Warnock’s side, eventually losing 3-1 in South Wales.
And coupled with Sheffield United’s win over Wolves on Wednesday, the Yorkshire giants have slipped to third in the division, but our resident Whites supporters shouldn’t be overly concerned, and actually should be encouraged by a recent report from Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
And that’s because they report that the Championship club are still in the hunt to land young defender Aapo Halme, a Finland Under-21 international who is already a domestic league winner in his homeland.
The 19-year-old currently plays his trade at HJK Helsinki and has done since 2015, making 36 appearances for the senior team in that time, including 13 league appearances this year to help the club win the Veikkausliiga title with five games to spare.
And the Finland youth international, capped twice at Under-21 level, reportedly attracted the interest of Leeds back in May this year, but no deal materialised over the summer, yet recent reports suggest that Christiansen’s men remain in pursuit of the centre-back.
The Whites have struggled at times in the centre-back department this term and another option wouldn’t go amiss, although they face a battle to land Halme as Ajax and Hoffenheim are also thought to be interested.
Thus, it very much remains to be seen what the future holds for the defensive sensation.
Landlord’s verdict: There have been many positives in Leeds United’s start to the Championship season, and one of those has been the performances of young defender Conor Shaughnessy.
The 20-year-old has been mightily impressive when called upon in the heart of the Whites backline, and head coach Thomas Christiansen may be hoping for a similar impact from Aapo Halme should he land the 19-year-old.
The Finland youngster is already a league winner and is making strides at HJK Helsinki, and Leeds clearly like what they see as they reportedly remain in pursuit of the centre-back, four months after they were first linked with his services.
You can never have too many options in the Championship, and landing Halme in January could be exactly what Leeds need to bolster their ranks, and thus sustain a promotion push.
