West Brom were told to sign Virgil van Dijk when at Celtic

West Bromwich Albion could have once had the world’s most expensive defender at The Hawthorns.

According to a report by the Scottish Sun, former scout Stuart Millar had urged the Baggies to sign Virgil van Dijk from Celtic.

However, the scout has since quit Albion after his pleas for the club to sign him had fallen on deaf ears.

It has been claimed that Millar had watched the tall centre-back 20 times and knew that he would be a star in the game, before completing moves to Southampton and then Liverpool in a record deal.

“In my time at West Brom, I had to watch Van Dijk 20 times. That was my brief,” he told the Scottish Sun.

“I knew after 20 minutes that he was good enough to play in the English Premier League.

“I recommended him to Tony Pulis and said, ‘We must sign him’. I put on the report, ‘If we sign Van Dijk we’ll double our money in two years’.

“I got that wrong because it was about ten times the value they got back.

“Unfortunately West Brom didn’t pursue that, which was frustrating on my part and ultimately why I left West Brom – because I was certain I was recommending a player who was top notch.”

The Verdict:

West Brom will have been wondering what might have been if they were able to land Van Dijk when Millar had told them to do so.

Tony Pulis, who was the manager at the time, will not have improved his approval rating at the Hawthorns any further as he allegedly refused to add Alisson to his squad as well, again with Liverpool making a then world-record fee for the goalkeeper.

The manager also played a big role in their relegation from the Premier League and will almost certainly be given a hostile reception when West Brom host them in February for the return fixture against Middlesbrough, having already lost 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium earlier in the campaign.
