# Aston Villa: Summer target Trevoh Chalobah could leave Chelsea

**[Aston Villa](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/aston-villa-news/) transfer target Trevoh Chalobah could leave Chelsea in January, according to [Fabrizio Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1573796668776013826).**

### The lowdown

Senior [ESPN](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/blog-transfer-talk/story/4724846/live-transfer-talk-borussia-dortmund-to-make-move-for-manchester-uniteds-cristiano-ronaldo#:~:text=Aston%20Villa%20and%20Inter%20Milan%20are%20interested%20in%20taking%20Chelsea%27s%20Trevoh%20Chalobah%20on%20loan%2C%20according%20to%20ESPN%20sources.) writer Tom Hamilton [reported in August](https://twitter.com/tomhamiltonespn/status/1560576203890626560) that Villa held an interest in signing the centre-back on loan, while journalist Jacque Talbot [revealed](https://twitter.com/jac_talbot/status/1570750725243965441) this month that Chalobah – the subject of enquiries from Villa, Inter Milan and AC Milan – could be granted a temporary move in January.

The 23-year-old has [only made one appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trevoh-chalobah/leistungsdaten/spieler/346314) for the Blues so far this season, playing 90 minutes against Leicester City at the end of last month.

### The latest

Romano [took to Twitter](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1573796668776013826) on Saturday night to issue an update on Chalobah’s future.

He said that the Englishman could move in the winter in search of game-time if his situation at Stamford Bridge remains the same.

The journalist tweeted: *“Trevoh Chalobah could leave Chelsea in January. He’s still hoping to play more – and that’s why Chalobah could leave if nothing changes.”*

### The verdict

The outlook appeared bleak for Chalobah when Chelsea [invested in two new central defenders](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-chelsea/transfers/verein/631) during the summer transfer window, spending [more than £100m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-chelsea/transfers/verein/631) on Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Villa simply have a greater need for the 23-year-old than Graham Potter’s side at this stage, with Diego Carlos [ruled out for much of the season](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12673555/diego-carlos-aston-villa-defender-requires-surgery-after-rupturing-achilles-tendon) following an Achilles tendon rupture.

As per [FBRef](https://fbref.com/en/players/5515376c/Trevoh-Chalobah), Chalobah is an excellent distributor of the ball, ranking in the top 10 percentiles among centre-backs in the big five European leagues for pass volume and completion, while his ball carrying can also be a weapon (84th percentile for progressive carries, 91st for dribbles completed). He also offers an impressive goal threat too, placing in [the very highest percentile](https://fbref.com/en/players/5515376c/Trevoh-Chalobah) for goals per 90.

[Thiago Silva](https://chelseanews.com/blog/the-future-of-the-club-silva-lavishes-praise-on-chelsea-teammate/) called him ‘the future of Chelsea’, while [Ian Wright](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/chelsea-news-trevoh-chalobah-praised-24788529) says that he’s reminiscent of Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, so hopefully Villa might be able to seize upon any uncertainty over the defender’s Stamford Bridge future.
