‘Hopes lifted just to be dropped again’ – Some West Ham fans on Twitter fuming with latest link

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini looks desperate to improve the club’s central defensive options this summer.

Pellegrini has added Issa Diop to his ranks, which also includes Winston Reid and Angelo Ogbonna, but the former Manchester City manager doesn’t look to be done there. After having a £12m bid rejected for Craig Dawson by West Brom, according to the Telegraph, the Hammers now appear to have turned their attention to Dawson’s team-mate Ahmed Hegazi.

The Express and Star reports that Hegazi has a £10m relegation clause in his contract that West Ham could now activate. Assessing the personnel West Ham already have in central defensive, Hegazi would hardly represent an upgrade.

He could, however, be a very useful squad player to have and at £10m – which is half the fee West Brom want for Dawson (via the Telegraph) – it wouldn’t be the worse deal made this summer.

That being said, if the east London club fail to acquire the more marquee names they’ve been linked with this transfer window, Hammers fans’ frustration over the likes of Dawson or the £5m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Hegazi being signed would be understandable.

Take a look at West Ham fans’ thoughts on the potential signing of Hegazi here…
