Pepe Reina has again been linked with a £20 million move to Arsenal. The Spaniard has already announced that he wants to be playing in the Champions League, a goal which at the moment Liverpool simply cannot fulfill. It seems that Reina is afraid he could have to wait 2 years for the chance to play again at the top level in Europe, and he is on the look-out for a club which could provide him with that.
He’s already been linked with Manchester United this season, but Arsene Wenger has emerged as the favourite to sign the Liverpool goalie, and apparently the Gunners are rumoured to be his first-choice. Wenger had appeared happy to place his trust in Polish keeper Wojciech Szczesny, even offering the No.53 a new contract. Events at Wembley yesterday however, must surely be playing on the Frenchman’s mind as he thinks of ways to strengthen his squad over the Summer.
Wenger has already blamed fatique and nerves for the cock-up that occured in the Arsenal goal, and to be fair to Szczesny all goalkeepers make mistakes, but they’re also left to carry the can for those mistakes. And Szczesny has a big can to carry. Arsenal need a truly top-class goalkeeper if they are to challenge for major honours something which has been proved by the success of Manchester United’s Van Der Sar, Chelsea’s Petr Cech and the aforementioned Reina at Liverpool.
Kenny Dalglish is obviously desperate to convince Reina to stay, as he himself looks to build a new Liverpool team to challenge for titles next season. The player’s agent is apparently discussing a £110,000 a week contract with the club, but will it be enough to keep Pepe in his place?
Stay tuned, because I don’t think this one is going to go away!
