AC Milan centre-back Thiago Silva has been linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer, with comments made by the player in an interview with an Italian newspaper being held as evidence against the Brazilian.
Silva apparently told Gazzetta dello Sport (which means, Sports Gazzette…I think) that ‘it’s great to have my name linked with a club like Manchester United who are currently one of the cornerstones of European football.’ Quite what United fans will make of the ‘currently’ bit should be interesting….hello Thiago…George Best, 1968 and all that….no?
He was quick to clarify his position however, with a hurried ‘but at the moment I am just thinking about the ‘Scudetto’.’ The Scudetto is the Italian word for the Serie A title, by the way! AC Milan are currently top of Serie A, and it’s in no small part down to Silva whose performances this season have been excellent. He’s part of a defence that have only conceded 22 goals this season.
Critics of the current United team have pointed out that, defensively, the Red Devils have been having a bit of an off season, and the back four could be down for a bit of refurbishment (which makes them sound like furniture) in the summer. Rio Ferdinand, stripped of his England captaincy, has suffered from injuries this season and at 32 is entering the autumn of his career. Nemanja Vidic and Johnny Evans have both been handicapped by injuries and horror tackles on Bolton players greatly reducing their playing time.
Chirs Smalling has proved to be a hot prospect for the future, but Sir Alex would undoubtedly welcome another centre-back to Old Trafford if given the chance. At just £16 million for Silva, that chance might come sooner then Fergie thinks.
