‘£20 million and Woodward gets a statue’ – Twitter reacts to Chris Smalling’s potential departure

It is looking increasingly likely that Manchester United will wave goodbye to central defender Chris Smalling this summer as the club prepare to sell the England man in the aftermath of Victor Lindelof’s arrival at Old Trafford.

It seems as though there will be a long list of admirers waiting to bid for Smalling who has been at United for seven years and made over 150 appearances for the club.

United signed Smalling back in 2010 from Fulham and he was seen as having the potential to become one of the country’s finest central defenders legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

It hasn’t quite panned out the way Ferguson has expected, although Smalling has won all there is to win in the English game during his time with the Red Devils.

The central defender is occasionally brilliant but more often than not inconsistent and it looks likely that the United faithful here in the Tavern will rejoice when he departs.
